Maybe someday it will be redone. Anchors Aweigh features songs from Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn, but the most famous musical number from this film is the dance duet of Gene Kelly and Jerry the mouse. Adorable Kathryn Grayson is the center of the love triangle, but while she gets to sing a couple of songs, it's Gene Kelly who stands out in this campy, happy-go-lucky, pro-soldier, post-war, silly musical. All that creative talent was under contract to Metro-Goldwyn- Mayer. After many failed attempts to find Iturbi, including a rehearsal at the Hollywood Bowl all hope is lost for Joe and Clarence, who want to come clean with Susan and tell her there was no audition. Mayer gave in and the team wrote some really fine ballads for him to sing.
Joe, who is trying to match-make Susan and Clarence, scares off Kraler, then falsely assures Susan that Clarence and Iturbi are the best of friends. The film has attractive visual gimmicks, quite apart from the man-and-cartoon-mouse stuff. Trying to make Susan impressed with Clarence, Joe tells her that Clarence is a personal friend of Iturbi, and that he has arranged an audition for Susan with him. Having saved Clarence's life in battle, Joe now feels responsible for him; so he postpones his date. I would also list Gene Kelly as one of the most beautiful people of the 20th century. Between its songs, its romantic plot, its military tributes and its incongruous inclusion of classical music, Anchors Aweigh expanded to a running time of two hours, twenty minutes. It's Sinatra at his best. So if Mayer didn't learn a lesson, producer Joe Pasternak did and allowed Kelly artistic control. A young boy, Donald Martin Stockwell , has been picked up wandering the streets. Kelly did the choreography, and his first-ever 'dream ballets', two of them, are on display here - the famous pas de deux with Jerry The Mouse, and the Zorro interlude. Some sources claim initially agreed to loan out Mickey, but rejected the deal.
And does Joe end up with Susie, who loves him too? Anchors Aweigh is a great example of why musicals just aren't made any more. An initial disclaimer notes that some ethnic and racial stereotypes may be considered offensive by today's standards. If you had to pay market value for it, the cost might retire some third world country's debt. She also did some classical numbers. The dynamic range is somewhat limited, but the highs aren't harsh and the lows aren't boomy.
Originally Katherine Grayson wanted to be an opera star. All of Kelly's dances are breathtaking, be it the pared-down simplicity of his tap number with Sinatra to 'I Begged Her', his 'Mexican Hat Dance' with the sweet wide-eyed little girl, or his lavish Spanish-influenced dance 'La Cumparsita'. They proved it in Anchors Aweigh when Kathryn Grayson put her soprano to work on All of a Sudden My Heart Sings. Director George Sidney , provided his usual solid craftsmanship, but the movie is overstuffed. Clarence is smitten with her from the beginning. Trying to fix her up with Sinatra, Kelly says he can get her an audition with Jose Iturbi. The screen test is a knockout coloratura performance.
There are two problems with giving Iturbi an important role in the movie - one, nobody has ever heard of Jose Iturbi, and two, his Valencian accent is so strong that it renders him virtually unintelligible. But I'm not sure what you would cut out. The plot if that is not too choate a term for it goes thus: an aircraft carrier puts in at San Diego, and two sailors are given shore leave. He was an important part of the movie as the basic plot was to get Grayson an audition with him. Thus do Clarence and Joe meet Susan Abbott Kathryn Grayson, , Donald's aunt and his only family since the death of his parents. The story is thin, but it has some human interest, and there are so many humorous situations that one is kept laughing most of the way. You'll feel good after seeing this movie.
Some viewers might mistake this for film grain, but it looks nothing like it. Works published before 1923, in this case 1906, are now in the public domain. But Gene and Jerry still look great, with Kelly always hitting his spots and looking exactly where he needs to look. A nice counter-point in the movie is how Sinatra a ladies man even then played the role of wanting to just find a date while on leave. New York: Wid's Films and Film Folk, Inc.
